Per its third-quarter 2026 report, released October 29, InterDigital says Europe's Unified Patent Court granted it two fresh injunctions against Disney during the quarter. One concerns an encoding patent linked to the HEVC standard; the other concerns technology that lets video move from a device to a screen, such as sending content from a phone to a television. According to InterDigital, the court held that Disney was an unwilling licensee and that InterDigital bargained in good faith. The licensor tallies eight injunctions secured across eight decided patent actions against the streamer so far. On the earnings call, InterDigital's chief executive asserted that Disney had reportedly shifted certain 4K offerings away from HEVC to the VP9 format. That account originates with InterDigital and Disney has not verified it. Both points come from a party in a live licensing disagreement, and the effect on Disney's streaming expenses or its product range remains unclear.
