Meta's newly launched Muse shopping agent faced a major setback when Amazon prohibited it from accessing and executing transactions on September 20, 2026. The retailer objected to privacy implications, data security exposure, and harm to customer experience, while also noting that Meta had never sought authorization. Muse launched barely two weeks earlier on September 8, quickly becoming the top app on Apple's US store and accumulating 2.5 million downloads. Meta has already wired Muse into Shopify Shop Pay, Stripe Link, PayPal, and Instacart to enable purchases through those channels. Amazon's exclusion signals a critical weakness in Muse's rollout model: retailers with strong consumer relationships and protective stances toward customer data can simply refuse to participate, regardless of how quickly the AI assistant spreads among end users.
