DOJ opens beef price investigation into eight major retailers including Walmart

The Department of Justice expanded its scrutiny of rising beef prices to the retail level, sending letters to eight retailers including Walmart, Costco, Amazon, Kroger, Publix, Albertsons, Aldi and Ahold Delhaize concerning recent increases in beef retail prices. The DOJ called beef prices a critical concern and priority, as officials noted that the four largest beef processors control over 85% of the market. This follows a prior DOJ investigation announced in May into potential antitrust violations in the meatpacking industry, with the agency seeking whistleblowers to report potential price-fixing, bid-rigging or other fraudulent conduct.
