The San Juan Basin Royalty Trust holds a 75% net overriding royalty interest in conventional natural gas and oil properties in northwestern New Mexico, comprising over 119,000 net producing acres with thousands of wells primarily in the Pictured Cliffs, Mesaverde, Mancos, and Dakota formations, along with coal seam reserves. The Trust generates revenue by receiving 75% of net proceeds from the sale of oil, natural gas, and condensate produced from these properties after deduction of operating costs, severance taxes, property taxes, and capital expenditures; production volumes and cash flow depend critically on commodity prices and production costs determined by the operator Hilcorp. The Trust distributes net royalty income to unit holders, though distributions may be suspended when capital expenditures for well development and completion activities create excess costs that must be recovered from future production proceeds before distributing cash to shareholders.
